A Dark Wood Spinet Desk and Stepping Away from the Paint Brush

This one is proof that I don’t paint everything I get my hands on. I know that’s mainly what I share, but I do value a great wood piece. The pieces I paint need some paint to liven them up and usually have multiple problems with the wood finish. This one is perfect as is in its dark finish and with those delicate legs. I know I said it when I shared the Black and Salmon Spinet Desk, bit I just love these pieces. They have a gorgeous shape and can work anywhere – so functional! I’ve held onto it for a few years and used it as a writing desk, and even though it’s not currently in use, I can’t let it go.

I have some projects in the works, but I am running low on great pieces to work on, so I need to get on finding some more. I am currently sanding a pair of mid century nightstands down to bare wood in the hopes of restoring their finish, so look out for those coming in next week. I guess I’m stepping away from the paint brush for a while. Not really! The MCM nightstands will have paint on them somewhere, and it’s probably going to be the drawers. I also have some fun news to share sometime too!

If you are in need of some before and after furniture makeovers in the meantime, head over to the Before & After page. There are some great pieces there, although I may be a bit biased 😉

It's great to see that not everyone is painting everything. I have many unpainted pieces…some might say they need to be painted, but this little guy is definite proof that not everything should be!

I agree with the preceding comment. "You've go to know when to hold them and know when to fold them." Your desk left in it's dark wood glory is timeless. Bully for you.

I commented previously on your Black and Salmon desk as I have one of these spinet desks which is currently 3rd on my list. I couldn't bare to paint it so I too am stripping and staining but I have been planning on adding colours to the cubbies. Thanks for sharing. You seem to have had a few of these spinet desks! Good finds!

I have a very similiar spinet desk to this, but it is not in that super condition like yours! And one leg is wobbly, I'm still trying to figure out how to fix it. I've painted and stripped it, but it needs a super stripping treatment, if that makes sense lol. Yours is very nice!

I owned a spinnet desk years ago as a teenager that I got from a second hand store for about $50.00. It was my first makeover project. I stripped the old white paint and stained it to its natural wood. Foolishly after owning it for about 10 years when I got married I curbed it trying to blend into a contemporary look to appease my wife. I regret it everyday and if I could ever buy another one like it I would!

I have this desk which has numbers under the draw of 753 H 52 which was inherited around 1950.The difference is 5 cubby holes on both side of the center draw, with tiger maple appliques.
