Ahh… the clean lines of mid century pieces are just so great! I picked this one up from a garage sale along with the matching nightstand (still have to figure out what to do with that one!) knowing I have a lot of people looking for mid century pieces.
It was very dull and the wood had a faded look, but it was in pretty decent condition. Mid century pieces are so versatile and timeless I don’t like to paint them… or at least not the whole piece. I have done two other MC dresser – you can see those here and here – and so I did the usual, stain part of it dark and paint part of it white.
I hand sanded the whole piece and tried staining it, but the top did not take the stain very well and the trim that comes down the front sides had that stain on it that looks like paint. So, the sides and drawers got two coats of Rustoleum’s Ultimate stain in Dark Walnut, then weresealed with poly in a satin finish. I then taped the piece up and primed with Zinsser’s oil-based stain blocking primer. After that cured I did a coat of Kilz primer (not oil based or stain blocking). Even after the two coats of primer I still had to do 4 coats of white (which is the reason I despise painting with white). Once it cured I lightly sanded to smooth everything out and then sealed with clear wax.
I see this one being used as a console to store electronics and hold a tv. It even came with a piece of glass to cover and protect the top!

It's beautiful! You breathed new life back into that piece, without ruining it's mid-century flair. Perfect!

FANTASTIC! I would love to do this. I have a house full of MCM furnishings that we got in the 70-80's and still love it. But alot of what I see on CL, etc. needs freshening, and this is the ticket! Love it.

LOVE this fresh take on a two toned dresser! The lines are so gorgeous and I love how you left some of it stained. Pinning for sure! 🙂

This is amazing. I love midcentury anything, but this is seriously fabulous….. I think I have a dresser that (while may not be midcentury) could def benefit from some two-tone action. Thanks for the inspiration!

Man oh man that's gorgeous! I love the two tone. I've been looking for a MCM piece for months and months now to do something similar to it. I'd like to use it as a console/credenza. I'm hoping ill luck up and find one soon.

SO pretty! I've been having a difficult time finding affordable mid century pieces here in hampton roads, VA. Everyone knows the manufacturer and wants hundreds more than in my budget. I'm keeping a look out though. The finish on this piece is to die for! so glad you didn't paint the whole thing!

I just bought a piece that looks almost identical to this one! I got it for $40 at a garage sale and it is in very good condition. I had planned on painting it white and using it in my ofice, but after seeing what you've done I may try the two tone. It looks terrific!
