I’ve been switching it up! I’m actually quite proud of myself for taking a break from so many dressers… but I am ready to go back 🙂 This lovely hutch came off of craigslist and I don’t think it was that bad in the beginning, but giving it a paint job just gives it a whole different feel.
When we picked up the cabinet and brought it home, we could smell the pledge they used to shine it all up. And it was strong. I was slightly worried that even after sanding latex paint wouldn’t stick right with all the oil on the piece, so I opted to use milk paint.
I mixed up a custom color using Federal Blue, Snow White and a hint of Tavern Green and made sure to add the bonding agent so it would adhere to the piece. The whole cabinet got 3 coats of paint, and once it was fully dry I took some 150 grit and 220 grit sandpaper to it. The 220 smoothed everything out, and the 150 gave it the worn look with some distressing on the edges and legs. I gave it a good wipe down and then sealed it with clear wax and added new hardware. On the inside I taped it off and left it unpainted so there would be a nice contrast between the dark wood and light paint. And just a note – the blue shows up different in some of the pictures, the last one is washed out, but it shows the pretty lined drawer with ikat paper. I love me some ikat!

They are so similar! Yours looks great in that color too! These cabinets are great because they can be used for so many different things.
Thanks! It is just great all on its own 🙂
Great job. I would have a hard time selling that one if you plan to sell it.
I want to nominate you for the Liebster Award. You are probably asking what a Liebster Award is? It is a blogger to blogger award. Its a way of encouraging smaller blogs. When you receive it you have to nominate 11 bloggers with less than 200 Followers.
Come on over to http://churchstreetdesigns.blogspot.com/2013/09/liebster-award.html ,
there are some questions to answer and then you can put the badge on a post and nominate people too!
So dang purty! Love the contrast. I love the Ikat too. Where did you find that paper/fabric??
I used to have a hard time selling pieces, but I feel like it has gotten easier the more I do it. I know there will always be another piece I love as well!
I have been nominated before, but thank you! 🙂
Thanks Beth! The paper is from World Market. It is hand made and comes in little sheets (some are rolled up). It was my first time using it and I just stuck it down with modge podge. It can be expensive if there are multiple drawers to be lined, but on a piece with just one or a few drawers it is a fun surprise to have some color and pattern.
That blue is so gorgeous! Love it!!

I love it! I pinned it too. I love the color and that you left the inside the original wood color. The drawer liner is a fun surprise too. I just love antiqued pieces like this one. 🙂
