I picked up a set of dressers this weekend, and today I am sharing the shorter of the two. I always tend to like this size best when it comes to dressers, which means it got done first! It had lovely turned legs and good curves, but all of the carved detailing along with the multiple wood tones was just not my style. The plan was to tone it down with paint, but not to have it look too french. To avoid the shabby chic-french look I went with a dark color and one that I rarely use — black.
The dresser got sanded, dings got filled and then the painting began. It took 3 coats of paint and 2 coats of clear wax. I did lightly hand sand with 320 grit sandpaper on the flat surfaces before waxing to make sure they were extra smooth and the finish would come out even. Lastly, to dress up the elegant black I chose to use glass knobs which I picked up from Hobby Lobby. This dresser definitely has a new look, and one that fits in with my style.

You did a great job on this dresser! I love it :))
Did you paint it by hand with a brush or spray it? The finish looks flawless!
Thanks! I do really love the glass knobs with the black!
Thanks Teri! The mirror was a good find at the Habitat Store – I think it is pretty fun.
Glad you like it! I am really glad I went with black on this piece – I hand paint every piece with a low sheen paint and then seal with wax.

I agree about the knobs. Glass knobs are great and were the only way to go on this one!

You are so kind! It is in my top 10 favorites.
Sometimes I think black can be overdone, but on the right piece it can be stunning! Glad you may give it another try.
Done, Jane! 🙂

Ive been so busy lately away and then with friends staying and I haven't checked your blog but wow you have been busy. So many stunning pieces and paint jobs. This is totally gorgeous. I can't believe the detail and how divine Otis. Looks good in back also. Great choice.

I am in love with black painted furniture! And once again, you nailed it with the knobs. Simply stunning.
this dresser is just beautiful, what a great job !!!!!
what color black did you use? I want to paint something black and I am scared to do it but your dresser is so nice that I want to give it a try. Can you tell me the brand and name of the black that you use?
Thank you
Debbie
It's Sherwin Williams Tricorn black. It is black, but maybe not as true of a black as you might expect. Another great black paint I love is General Finished Lamp Black Milk Paint.
Coming over from Better After. Okay, that is just simply gorgeous. Love it! And the casters add so much! Good work.
Love it! This dresser would have looked fabulous in almost any color. But black makes it look so chic and 'uptown'. And the knobs? Gorgeous as well! My favorite part: NO distressing! I'm SO tired of everyone taking furniture from drab to drabber (yeah, that's my new word for 'let's get over excessive fake distressing!") LOL! What can I say? I'd be happy to have this in my own home. LOVE painted furniture that looks new again 🙂 (Visiting from Better After)
Wow! It looks so pretty, and the mirror above too!
Thank you for sharing your new beauty!
Lydia
Thanks! I appreciate a nicely painted piece with no distressing. I do think some pieces look nice with light distressing on the edges to highlight details, but the whole piece doesn't need to be heavily distressed everywhere. Thanks for stopping by!

I am in love with this! Can't wait to try this on an old dresser I have. Thanks for the inspiration!
That is FANTASTIC in black! I realize some people have a panic attack at the thought, but I say it's your piece – make it beautiful!! Love it. Would love it if you ever had a chance to join in the Trash 2 Treasure Link party happening over at Kammy's Korner. Goes live every Monday night. http://www.kammyskorner.com/2013/12/trash-2-treasure-tuesday-etsy-discount.html
I know this was a long time ago, but I am just seeing it for the first time. What a perfect time to paint a piece. This looks so elegant. Wonderful job.
I'm planning on painting an armoire similar to the style of this one. I don't have a lot of experience painting… just a couple bookcases. Probably a stupid question….when you're sanding the piece, do you avoid those french details or sand them as well? And what kind of wax should I use to finish it? Thanks!
