Sometimes I buy furniture and don’t realize how much work it needs. I found this dresser on craigslist and scooped it up right away. I saw that the bottom drawer was missing some veneer, but thought it would cute painted… and I like when a piece is a little beat up and has some character. Right after I bought it I realized there was more veneer missing than I thought, but it was a piece I tried something new with!
Everyone raves about Chalk Paint. I could never justify spending $40 a quart, but my parents bought me some for my birthday. I chose to try it on this dresser incase I did not like it, I would not be disappointed if I wasted a really amazing piece of furniture I loved.
The drawers were left unpainted. First they got wiped down to get some spilt things off of them, then I used a 50/50 mix of vinegar and Olive Oil on them. It darkened them so much and made it seemed as if they had been restained. It took less then 5 minutes since I just went around the existing hardware and key holes. For the frame of the dresser, a little bit of veneer had to be removed with a wet towel and iron since someone had done a bad job putting one new veneer to cover up some of the old veneer that had come off. That spot got sanded to get the excess glue off, but otherwise I did not sand the rest of the dresser. I used 2 coats of Annie Sloan’s Duck Egg. I definitely expected it to be more blue since in pictures that is how it appears, but in person, it is very green which I do not like so much. It would not have been my first choice with the wood drawers, but I also don’t think it is the most terrible thing. Even though I did two thin coats, it still left brush strokes, so I sanded it all down to try and smooth it out. After distressing the edges I sealed it with 2 coats of Maison Blanche Le Craie Clear Wax and then buffed it out once it dried.

As usual, you really created a beautiful piece. So, what do you think of chalk paint?
Sharon @ Elizabeth & Co. says
I think the color looks great with the natural wood! And that wood is so rich and delicious! It's a pretty piece – great save! … Will you use more chalk paint?
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
Thanks Christine! Chalk paint is not my favorite. I'll do a post on it and the reasons why my experience with it was good and bad
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
Definitely glad I did not paint over the wood on the drawers! I will use what I have left of the chalk paint, but I am not sure I would purchase more.

It looks great. I love how you left the drawers unpainted. It really makes the whole piece!

I have a similar piece that I was planning on leaving the drawers unpainted as well. Loved how your came out. Have you considered adding feel/legs to this piece? It seems like this piece is just begging to be lifted off the floor. Just my two cents – you are a talented artist and I enjoy your work.
