I picked up this mahogany bow front dresser from an auction a few weeks ago and it was looking like this.
I knew that this one was going to be a bleeder, so I purposely was not going to pick a light color. As usual, I stayed with my favorite color pallet of blues and greys and chose to use Smokey Blue by Sherwin Williams. I used it on this writing desk and it has quickly become one of my favorite and go-to colors.
With this one, I used our orbital and belt sanders to rough up the finish so the paint had something to stick to. I then filled the 2 extra holes on the drawers, let dry, sanded it smooth, then filled a second time. Once everything was wiped down I put on the first coat of paint, and once it started drying I could see where it was bleeding through, but I decided to see if a second coat would help. It did a little, but not enough. I did not want to prime because I do not like priming, especially when it involved oil based primer, and I wanted to lightly distress without having the white primer coming through. The drawers had the most bleed through, on the frame of the dresser there was just a spot or two. I decided to put on two coats of water based poly, I always use Rustoleum Ultimate which is what I had on hand, and see if that would seal everything and stop the bleed through. I very lightly sanded after the poly dried to rough up the surface. I finished with 2 more thin coats of blue and had no problems with bleed through!
Once everything had cured for 2 days I lightly distressed and sanded the drawers with 220 grit sandpaper to get an extra smooth finish. I sealed it with Maison Blanche Le Craie clear was (which I am really liking) and buffet it out (this wax buffs really well and quite easily). I hope to do a post on waxes and paints along with my opinion and experience with Chalk Paint soon! I added the white knobs, and it was finished. I am in love with this piece! I think it is so darling! Oh, and that metal basket my mom brought home yesterday for my birthday. I have been wanting a wire basket like this so it was a great gift and perfect timing for me to use it. Also, how cool is that old, hand done black and white of Pikes Place Market in Seattle that I found at a sale? It’s hard to see in the pictures, but it a neat piece.

You've done such a beautiful job and I love the colour. The shape of this dresser is lovely also. I'm such a fan of bowed furniture. So wise of you to chose a darker colour over furniture that bleeds, this looks perfect. Thanks so much for linking to Paint Parade.
