I got this banker office chair after someone let me know their friend had some chairs they no longer needed. This is one of the chairs, the other one looks almost identical, but it is made of oak and slightly larger… it is more manly.
I prefer this one over the other, but the seat had a large crack and needed some fixing. My dad screwed the seat into the frame directly underneath it. Some of the screws had fell out and loosened over the years. One of the arms also needed a new screw to stabilize it. Once everything was tightened with some new screws, the chair looked great and felt sturdy, but the crack was obviously still there.
I don’t mind the crack. The chair overall is still so cool, but I planned on using wood filler to make it less noticeable. I decided to paint this one, the other one will be stained since it is better condition. I recently got new milk paint colors from the Old Fashioned Milk Paint Co. and was excited to try out the color slate on this chair. (Be sure to check out their products and let them know I sent you!) I have to say, this color is gorgeous! It is a light blue grey. It looks brighter blue depending on the light, but no matter what the color is amazing. I used the bonding agent to make sure it would stick without chipping off. It took about 2- 3 coat to cover. I prefer to paint with thinner paint, so I often have to do more coats.
I wanted a worn look, but not distressed or shabby chic, so I left spots on the chair with wood showing through the brush makes. I then sanded with 150 grit sandpaper to keep that worn look with the darker shadows of the wood coming through. This paint sands so well, which makes it easier to do the distressed or worn look. Latex can be a pain to distress because it just rolls and peels off.
Here she is all finished. I still can’t get over this color!
I love the old steampunk, industrial metal parts on the chair… and those casters! Old stuff is the best!

Thank you! I always think wood desks look best with painted chairs and painted desks look best with wood chairs. It just helps to mix up the finishes and tones in the space.
