$0.99 Hallway Cabinet

March 18, 2013 By Reeves @ The Weathered Door Leave a Comment

I have a project I have been meaning to share for a while. This is a piece my mom bought to put in the hallway that leads from the front entry into the kitchen and family room. The stairs in our house are directly across from this piece.

We found it at goodwill on a Sunday (we always do a goodwill run after church) a couple of weeks ago. It was the perfect size for the hallway and it had storage! (always a plus) The problem was it was priced at $130.00. The good thing was it had a blue tag which were half off, but that price was still way more than anyone in our household pays for anything. We ended up putting it on hold for the 1 hour limit and looked at it again right before we left, but instead of buying it our plan was to come back in the morning. One mondays the 50% off tags all go to $1.29, but since it was a holiday, they were going to be $0.99.

We went back in the morning at 8:30 and could not find it at first, but then we found it with new pieces in front of it. The funny thing was the hold sticker was still on it since none of the employees ever take them off. We snatched it up and loaded it in the car… and that’s when we saw it was stamped Lane on the bottom. Weird place to put it. After that we went to Top Pot Doughnuts to get some victory treats. Not really we would have done that anyway.

My mom chose to use the porpoise color I used on this nightstand. She has mainly tans in the house, but I am trying to get her to go towards taupes. I like grey, but taupe is a good middle ground. She sanded it down, then I painted 2 coats on the cabinet and she finished it off with one more. One thing that happened was a lot of the wood grain came through. I think some of the wood on this is burl wood, which we did not realize, so it looks funky since the pattern can be seen through the paint. After it dried for a few days I used Minwax Paste Wax to seal the piece.

I now use this cabinet to house my milk paint, some brushes and the current paint in use so it is not cold and thick when I want to use it. I also wanted to share my find for the day. It is this Ikea Tobias chair. I love acrylic or lucite chairs and have wanted one for a while, but never found a good deal for one on craiglists and I did not want to spend the $80 or $90 plus tax to buy a new one. Last night I found one listed with a glass and chrome table also from ikea. It was $40 for both and close to where we go to church, so I went with my mom and got it after church. I ended up just getting the chair and it was only $10! I just have it sitting in my room right now since there is no spot for it. It takes up little visual space so I don’t mind storing it. It is obviously not very attention grabbing 🙂

I also have a campaign cabinet to share with you and a walnut chair I picked up at good will earlier in the week. The cabinet is almost finished, but the chair has not been started… I need to get to work!

Do you know if ALL Goodwills have this amazing Monday policy, or is it just yours?

I believe $1.29 Mondays apply to all goodwills. At least at all of the ones where I am. You should check it out!

Oh I love your re-do!!!! My goodwills are all to California and to expensive, and would never have that awesome of a deal. Oh well! I still enjoy them and still buy quite a bit at them.

I can't believe you got a Lane cabinet for .99 what a steal. I love the color now that it's been painted. I went through a period where I refused to paint any wood until one day I looked at my house and realized that all the wood instead of being warm and soothing was just bland. It was still hard to paint that first piece after being raised to believe you didn't paint real wood.

What a fantastic bargain on a quality piece of furniture. Most people probably don't the good brands so that makes it all that much better for those of us who do.
    It turned out lovely.
