These mid century chairs came from a local auction last weekend. I knew both chairs needed to be ruepholstered, but I did not realize there was scuffed white paint on the right sides of each chair. Here is what they looked like when I brought them home.
First I used a clorox wipe to get off as much of the white paint as I could. After just a little scrubbing all that was left was some of the paint in the grain of the wood, but they looked so much better! My mom helped to reupholster the seat. We added another layer of batting, then the fabric. We went though our fabric stash, probably 10 or 15 options, then landed on some blue fabric my mom had recently picked up. The fabric was made of of 3 different squares. The colors were all shades of blues and whites with some teal/turquoise and ikat prints (which is one of my favorite things). We settled on this one (which is the one with a largest pattern and darkest colors). I always prefer larger patterns, the smaller ones can look busy and take away from the whole piece. The other thing I have found is navy blue really accents mid century or danish modern furniture. Here is a mid century nightstand I accented with some navy paint.
Chairs like this are pretty easy to upholster. I just unscrewed the seat from the bottom. The only problem I ran into was on one of the chairs, 3 or the 4 screws had a square head. The other ones were philips and at first I thought they were stripped out, but they were just different. To upholster the seats we just used a manual staple gun. The staples went almost all the way in, but we used a hammer to make sure they were really secure. Before screwing the cushions back onto the chairs I used my trusty orange oil to refrech the wood (this helps with light scratches), then covered up some of the scuffs and scratches where the stain color had come off.
I loved the mid century lines of the chairs before, but the new modern fabric makes them so much better!

Haha! Yes! Yes I do! Between school and this I am usually pretty busy. It can be hard to find time for furniture, but when I have the time I try to squeeze as much in as possible. I also tend to start things at different times and them finish everything all at once!

I just bought a set of those chairs! I love them. They are Broyhill Brasilia, if you've ever wondered the make of them.
