This weekend I found a set of two gorgeous antique dressers that happened to be in the next town over and only a few minutes from our house. That never happens! I loved that shape and style of these, and they weren’t it terrible condition, but only had some chipped veneer, scratched surfaces and missing finish.
I filled the places where the veneer was missing on the sides and a few spots where the hardware had worn down the drawers, then sanded everything down. I cleaned off the piece and chose to paint this one is a green color which I custom mixed from some samples I already had. The first coat was a little bright for me, so I lightened it a bit and finished it with two more coats.
After the paint had dried and cured overnight I gave the whole piece a light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper to get a really smooth finish and have a worn look to it. Some places the wood was barely visible through the paint, but I like the look of a worn finish so I left it. I love that the darker under color comes through ever so slightly along with the wood and the distressed edges. The whole piece got wiped down and then finished with clear wax and some new white knobs in a flower/rose design were added. And pretty paper lined drawers always add to the charm of a piece 🙂

Love the green. Looks like you took a walk on the wild side. It's not gray or blue! Great job.

This made my day! haha it's true 🙂 Hopefully I'll be doing some more pieces that aren't just grey and blue, but those happen to be my favorites so they won't be going anywhere 😉
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
So glad you said that! That is the look I strive for when redoing pieces – a more modern color to try to keep them from being too shabby chic, but shabby chic is a great look I just don't like it on every piece.
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
Thank you! I was quite scared during the process since the color seemed very bright and very green, but I think it all came together… especially with the knobs!
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
It is and I have never used it before so I am glad I tried it out. I'm sure it will be used again!
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
It's amazing how much the hardware can make a piece. I agree, the white rose pulls against the green seem so perfect!
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
I saw your hall table, gorgeous! I have been seeing a lot of green furniture lately, maybe it is the change of season!

I just love this! Do you mind telling me what the name of that color is? Thanks for your posts…I'm refinishing a dresser for the first time and really appreciate all your tips.
Stephanie Westers says
What do you typically use to line the drawers? Wallpaper cut to size? I'm clueless and new to all this. Thanks.
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
Thanks Angela! It is a funky color, but I really love it and am glad I didn't play it safe.
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
The color is custom mixed with a bright green I had and I added some dark grey, lighter grey and a hint of a brown-ish green color to tone it down. If it was not a custom color I would definitely let you know the name of it.
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
I'm happy to help! I don't always line drawers, but recently have been doing it more because it really finishes off a piece and is a fun surprise. I find the easiest thing is contact paper – I cut it slightly larger than the drawer, stick it down then use a razor to cut off any excess. I don't like a lot of the patterns I find in stores just because they are plain and somewhat old looking, but the ones I used on this piece I found at Marshalls. I only found it once, but I love the modern pattern and neutral colors. I have also used some hand made ikat paper from World Market and stuck it in with decoupage, but it comes in sheets that only fit little tiny drawers and is $3 a sheet which adds up really fast so I have only used it once on a piece with one small drawer.

Too funny! I am glad you can tell a piece is mine thought, it makes me feel like I have a certain style and look to my piece 🙂 Thanks, Alli!

I really like this green dresser and am wondering if you have two of them since you mention buying two dressers? I have a long space in the bedroom that would need either two dressers or one long one – if there are two these would be great!
Reeves @ The Weathered Door says
I don't have two, just one!
Elena says
Goodness, this one is GORGEOUS too! I love the colors you are using and the pieces you're redoing. they are unique! Makes me want to put at least one colorful unique piece in my home, but I have no more space, lol.
